Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.
I. Professional Development Goal
One of my professional development goal is to incorporate a literacy program for my classroom. From my observations at the high school placement, I noticed that students were struggling with reading comprehension and recall of the materials learned in previous lessons. Because of the low level of understanding and/or low reading levels, students also have trouble with their writing skills.
Improvement could be tracked and measured to see if student achievement by increasing literacy across all content areas. Introduction of reading and writing can be implemented in the four core subjects of ELA, history/social sciences, mathematics, and science. By having these subjects incorporate reading and writing skills, students will improve the classroom and school learning environment. Students will acquire knowledge and the skill set to pass their required courses as well as increase performance on mandatory assessments, like the NECAP and SATs. This ties in with the diversity of learners and critical thinking RIPTS.
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
Understanding My Students
In order for me to teach my students, I will need to get to know them on a personal level. To better acquaint yourself with my students, I will make the effort to find out their favorite subjects, and hobbies they like to do outside of school. I will also talk with other teachers and staff members in the school who may have worked with those students to find out what strengths and weaknesses they have had in the past and see if I can help strengthen those weaknesses and continue improving their strengths. Understanding their different styles of learning will help me better differentiate the materials that I use in the classroom and the approach that I use with each student.
Attending Workshops and Training Sessions
To improvement my professional development in all areas of education, I will attend workshops and training sessions that will help me better myself as a teacher. I am eager to learn about ways to improve student literacy across content areas, understanding how to interpret and implement IEPs, teaching students who are ELL, and building the science curriculum at my school. These workshops will not only broaden my knowledge as a teacher but also allow me to interact with other educators with the same interest and learn different views and perspectives from teachers in other school districts.
